I tried to do a small batch of steel cut oats in my rice cooker. First class mess  !
I used the recipe on the package:
1 cup oats
3 cups water
Anyone else with any suggestions, I do fine with quinoa and rice in it. It is an 8 cup rice maker.
Thanks

I just do mine on the stove top....no mess! I use 2 cups water to 1 cup steel cut oats. Turns out perfect every time. Only takes 30 min.

I have tried to make oatmeal several times in my slow cooker,,, ALWAYS turned out bad... yuk! not tried the rice cooker though don't think I will.. hehehehe
Oatmeal for me is on the stove,, less stess and always tastes good even though I always pull it to soon and is underdone.. but I have gotten used to eating it that way! chewy, (giggle)

Cat did mine on the stove today and left it too long. Then discovered that by adding hot water and stirring vigorously it absorbed the water and was just fine.

I do both oats and rice in the microwave in a covered pyrex dish. Perfect. At least IMO.
Do this.
Stop doing that.
Accept the rest.

May I ask how much 1/4 cup of oatmeal makes after cooking? My box just shows dry weight. Usually when I cook it a boil an apple then add my oat meal but i want to make sure my portion size is correct. Thanks

One of the nicest things about steel cut oatmeal is that you can cook a big batch one day and just put individual servings in zip-locks or little plastic containers. Then, just nuke. This is my breakfast of choice during the work week. I love to add some dried fruit to it, and cinnamon or apple pie spice. YUM

Try a crock pot - put it in b-4 you go to bed on low and it is creamy and ready for you in the a.m.

Although I like what is called "thick oats" at my FoodforLess store in the bulk section, for fast, I just take the regular quick cook oats and treat them like instant. Dry in a bowl pour boiling water over, cover with plastic wrap or a small dish and let sit for a few min. Add whatever, like cinnamon, or some cut up bananas and milk if you like.
Yummy! I have gotten my kid to like them this way also.

I'm new. How much dry oats do you use for a one serving bowl? Thank you, Tawanda

Hi , I use a 1/2 cup empty pudding container to measure the oats, right up to the top. Not sure if this is the right amount or not.
It's just what I use. After adding boiling water and then a little rice, soy or almond milk and fruit it's usually adequate for me. I eat an apple about an hour after the oatmeal.

I've just been re-reading the Solutions book, and a serving of oats is 1/2 cup cooked, or 1/4 cup dry. Cat's been doing this for a while and has found what works for her, but if you're just starting out, you might want to do what is suggested in the book. Just a thought.

One of the best things about oatmeal steel cut is that you can cook a large batch one day and just put it in individual portions or small zip lock plastic containers. Then, just nuclear. This is my breakfast of choice during the work week. I like to add some nuts to it, and the spice of cinnamon or apple pie.
