DH complaining food is too bland. What are your favorite spices to use, especially in vegetable soup, rice dishes, and bean dishes?

We (me and DH) just started this week, so I'm still learning my way around the spice rack. I made pinto and great northern bean soup the other day and DH complained it was bland -- we had some Spenda brown sugar blend (10 cal for 1/2 tsp) -- added a 1/2 tsp to a cup of beans and he really liked it. Not sure if that helps but it worked for my DH lol Posted Image

This is a recipe from the old Forum. Actually I don't use the tomato part of this recipe, just the green stuff.
I make a batch and freeze it in ice cube trays to use as needed. I tend to like spicy foods as they totally eliminate the salt craving for me. Don't even miss it. This is from a ricer named NYLatinaPR who was active when I started the rd.

Hi! I don't have a Mexican rice recipe but I do have a Puerto Rican rice recipe. This is how I eat my rice or other grains every day. Remember this is not very authentic because I had to tweek it for the RD and to be able to make it quicker and with more convenient ingredients.

First - Make a batch of sofrito - this is seasoning.

1 bunch of cilantro
2 large italian frying peppers or whatever green peppers you can find
1 medium onion
6 or more cloves of garlic (I go for more)

Blend it all up in a food processor.
I store this in 1/4 cup sizes in the freezer

1/2 to 3/4 cup of Sofrito
1 cup of rice or other grains
3 Tbs. of tomato paste (low sodium)
3 Tbs. of ketsup (low sodium)

Spray pot w/cooking spray, saute the sofrito, for a few minutes. Add your rice, water, tomato paste and ketchup. Cook the rice as you usually do.

You can also add beans to this such as pigeon peas or chickpeas.

I use Mrs. Dash. It has no fat, no sodium, no calories & adds flavor to everything you put it in.
Accent may or may not be another choice. It has 80mg/3% of sodium per 1/8 tsp & no calories, no fat. I would ask someone about Accent as it does have a very small amount of sodium in it.

The spices i use in my homemade vegetable soup are mainly rosemary, oregano, tarragon, and the tiniest pinch of theme.
