I have type II diabeties my A1C was 8+ with oral medication. My doctor said I would need to start taking insulin shots if it doesn't come down so I thought I would try the Rie Diet but one week into it my sugar is worse than it was before I started. I'm getting 200 and 300 plus readings and a message to check for ketones. I was following the program closely but added protein on the 5th day (currently on day 7) because I couln't think clearly and felt very tired. If anyone else has experienced this and overcame it I would appreciate some advice.

Thank you,
Brigitte

Brigitte you might want to contact Jayne@ricediet.com I know there are others who have done/are doing the rice diet who also have diabetes. Hopefully someone else will read this and reply. Please don't take any chances and stay in touch with your doc.

Brigitte,
I realize this is an old post but I hope you've talked with your physician. Losing 11 pounds rapidly may seem like a good thing, but because you said your meter was registering 'ketones', you may be losing it in a way that will harm your kidneys. Rapid weight loss can be a sign of out of control diabetes. I know from personal experience.

I also am a type II insulin resistant diabetic and when I switched from a low carb diet to the RD, my glucose levels spiked horribly. My old doctor was not interested in helping. He just told me to go back to a low carb diet. Period. End of discussion. My new doctor is willing to work with me and sees the benefit, long term, in a basically vegetarian diet. Probably not at all influenced by the fact that she's a Hindu and vegetarian :D . At any rate, when I first started on the RD, I started taking insulin. Less scary than I thought since I use the little pens rather than syringes. Over the last 2 months my glucose readings have started making good strides downwards. I'm taking half the insulin I used to and full expect the trend to continue as my body adjusts *and* as I lose weight.

Hope this helps some and hope you're doing better!

.
Aomiel
